Liverpool Waves International
Music & Marching Band Festival 2024

The inaugural Liverpool WaVeS International Music and Marching Band Festival, held on July 6th and 7th, 2024, showcased a vibrant array of musical talent from both the UK and the USA. The festival featured a diverse lineup of performers, including marching bands, orchestras, jazz ensembles, choirs, and dance groups, all contributing to a multicultural celebration of music.

Highlights from the 2024 Festival:

  • Performances at Liverpool ONE Stage:

    • York Concert Band: A traditional adult concert band performing a mix of musical theatre, pop, and marches.
    • Wirral Grammar Schools Combined Big Band: Featuring top musicians from both boys’ and girls’ schools.
    • Southport String Ensemble: A combination of students from various schools playing classical and folk music.
    • Showstoppers: A community band of all ages and abilities playing tunes from stage, screen, and TV.
    • Wirral Girls Grammar School Swing Band: Students and staff bringing a swinging end to the festival.

  • Parades:

    • St. John’s Festival Band (USA): A brass, winds, and percussion ensemble from St. Johns County, Florida, bringing their spirit and pride to Liverpool.
    • Batala Mersey: Over 60 diverse, dynamic, and passionate community musicians performing worldwide.

  • Special Performances:

    • Mersey Swing: Specializing in sharing the joy and excitement of Swing Dancing in Liverpool.
    • Duo Lumiere: One of the North West’s most enchanting musical duos.
    • Stian Jebsen (Norway): A talented up-and-coming musical theatre performer.

The festival’s success was marked by its ability to unite diverse musical groups, fostering cultural exchange and community engagement. The event not only celebrated musical talent but also highlighted the importance of music education and its positive impact on young people.

On Saturday 29th June, Liverpool WaVeS director, John Perry, and David McGuffin, St.John’s Festival Band organiser, were interviewed by Sean Styles on his Radio Merseyside morning show. They underlined the importance of music education for young people, with a focus on the lack of opportunities in the UK compared to other countries and stressed the need for more programs to engage young people in music education.
